Tat Tvam Asi: Thou art that, is one of the four mahavakias or grand pronouncements of Hinduism. A fundamental part of the Advaita Vedanta doctrine, it implies that ultimate truth does not lie in the illusory appearance of reality, nor in a distant or different God, or even in partial doctrines that attempt to encompass the infinite. Instead, the ultimate reality resides in the self: we are eternity, and each one of us is and contains the absolute whole.
Visitors to the Tat Tvam Asi at the Convent of Santo Domingo will find themselves at the centre of the workings underlying this proposal in which nothing wishes to appear circumstantial or superfluous. The temple itself, infused with genius loci and its sense of the sacred, helps to guide visitors both intuitively and symbolically towards a reflective and illuminating experience.
We must attempt to obtain a glimpse of the truth that is hidden beneath the chaos and illuminates the universe. It is up to us to set in motion the rusted-up cogs of transcendence.
